Comparison
Social media monitoring tools, compared — and the surface nine of them miss
Short answer
Social media monitoring tools fall into three groups. Enterprise listening suites — Brandwatch, Talkwalker, Sprout Social — cover public social, news and review sites with sentiment and share-of-voice reporting. Mid-market mention trackers — Brand24, Awario, Mention — do the same job at a lower price with Boolean keyword rules. Free tools — Google Alerts, F5Bot — cover indexed pages and a few specific forums. All nine are crawler-based, so all nine share one blind spot: private Facebook groups, where small businesses are actually asked for recommendations, are not indexable and never appear. HuddleWatch is the exception on this list because it reads groups as a member rather than as a crawler.
The ten tools, and what each one is actually for
| Tool | How it works | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Brandwatch | Enterprise listening across public social, news, blogs and forums, with sentiment, demographics and share-of-voice dashboards. | Priced and scoped for brand teams at large companies. Public, crawlable content only — closed communities are outside what it can index. |
| Talkwalker | Enterprise listening that reads images and video alongside text, plus a free alerts product for basic keyword coverage. | Same indexable-web boundary as every crawler-based suite. The free alerts tier is closer to Google Alerts than to the paid platform. |
| Brand24 | Mid-market mention tracking across social, news, blogs, podcasts and reviews, with sentiment and an influence score per mention. | Built to count mentions of a brand name. If nobody is saying your name yet — the normal case for a small service business — there is little to count. |
| Awario | Mention tracking with Boolean search rules, for people who want precise keyword logic without enterprise pricing. | Boolean precision does not help on a surface the crawler cannot reach. Coverage is the public, indexable web. |
| Mention | Mention alerts combined with social publishing and a shared inbox, so monitoring and posting live in one tool. | Monitoring is one half of a publishing product, and shallower on any single surface than a dedicated listening suite. |
| Hootsuite | Publishing and scheduling first, with keyword streams that surface public posts matching terms you set. | Streams are a scheduling feature, not a listening engine. They read public content on connected accounts, and the group feeds you belong to are not among them. |
| Sprout Social | Publishing, engagement and reporting, with query-based listening available on a higher tier. | Listening sits behind the expensive tier, and it covers the same public surface as the rest of the category. |
| Google Alerts | Free email alerts when a term appears on a page Google has indexed. | Indexed pages only, with no social coverage worth the name. Group posts are never in the index, so they never trigger an alert. |
| F5Bot | Free keyword alerts for Reddit, Hacker News and Lobsters. | Three sites. Excellent at those three and blind to everything else, Facebook included. |
| HuddleWatch | Reads Facebook groups, public and private, from accounts that are members — server-side — and scores every post and comment 0–100 for buyer intent rather than counting mentions. | Facebook groups only. If you need X, Instagram, press and review-site coverage, this is the wrong tool on its own — run it alongside one of the above. |
How it works
- 1
Pick the groups, not the whole internet
Paste group URLs or search by name. Ten well-chosen local or trade groups beat a firehose of public mentions, because the people in them are the ones who buy.
- 2
Describe what you sell
Keywords for literal matches, a sentence about your service for everything your keyword list would never predict.
- 3
Every post gets an intent score
0–100, on whether the poster has already decided to hire someone. Industry chat scores low and never reaches you.
- 4
Alerts land in under a minute
In-app, email, or Slack. Group leads convert on reply speed, so latency is the product.
What you get
Private groups, not just public posts
The coverage gap every crawler-based monitoring tool has. Monitoring runs from accounts that are members, so closed groups read the same as open ones.
Intent scoring instead of mention volume
Brand-monitoring suites optimise for catching every mention. That is the wrong goal when you want leads, not a sentiment chart.
Runs 24/7 server-side
No extension, no tab to keep open, no machine to leave awake. A 2am post is read at 2am.
Your account is never connected
No OAuth, no session cookie, no extension reading your feed. Nothing here can get your personal profile flagged.
Comments are watched too
Recommendation threads often carry the real detail three replies deep into someone else's post.
Slack and CRM export
Scored leads route into the channel your team already lives in, or out to the CRM so nothing gets worked twice.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best social media monitoring tool?
It depends on which surface you need read. For brand reputation across public social, news and review sites at enterprise scale, Brandwatch or Talkwalker. For the same job on a smaller budget, Brand24 or Awario. For free keyword alerts on indexed pages, Google Alerts, or F5Bot if you only care about Reddit and Hacker News. For finding people asking to hire someone inside Facebook groups, none of those work, because group content is not indexable — that is the gap HuddleWatch covers.
Are there free social media monitoring tools?
Google Alerts and F5Bot are genuinely free, and Talkwalker offers a free alerts tier. All three cover indexed pages or a short list of specific sites. Free tools are fine for catching your own name in the news and useless for watching a closed community.
What is the difference between social media monitoring and social listening?
In practice vendors use them interchangeably. Where a distinction is drawn, monitoring means catching individual mentions and responding to them, and listening means aggregating those mentions into trends, sentiment and share of voice. Both describe reading public content; neither implies coverage of private communities.
Is this a replacement for Brandwatch or Meltwater?
No, and it is worth being blunt about that. Those tools monitor public social, news and review sites for brand mentions across every platform. HuddleWatch monitors Facebook groups — including private ones, which they cannot reach — and scores posts for buying intent rather than sentiment. Different job. Teams that need both run both.
Which social platforms does HuddleWatch monitor?
Facebook groups only, public and private. We would rather cover one surface properly than claim a platform list we monitor shallowly.
Why can't other monitoring tools see Facebook groups?
Because group content is not indexable. A crawler-based tool can only monitor what a crawler can fetch, and private groups are not in that set at any price. Reading them requires being a member, which is how HuddleWatch works.
How is intent scoring different from mention tracking?
Mention tracking answers 'who said my keyword'. Intent scoring answers 'who is about to hire someone'. On a busy group the first is dozens of pings a day and gets muted in week two; the second is a handful, and most are worth replying to.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Monitoring runs on our infrastructure from accounts we operate. There is no extension and nothing to keep open.
What does it cost?
Pro is $50/month for 10 groups with scored alerts. Master is $150/month for 50 groups and adds keyword watches, custom intent scoring, Slack alerts, CRM export and five seats.
