Social selling without being annoying

The difference between participating in a community and farming it, and why the first one outperforms the second on every measure that matters.

Short answer

Social selling works when you are useful in public and let people come to you, and fails when you treat a community as a contact list. The practical rule: never send a message to someone who has not indicated they want what you sell, and always answer the question before mentioning that you do this for a living.

Social selling without being annoying

The term has been thoroughly ruined by people who used it to mean 'cold DMs, but I looked at your profile first'. If you have ever received a message that opened with 'Loved your recent post!' followed by a pitch with no evidence the post was read, you have met them. The underlying idea is old and sound: be visibly good at your job somewhere your buyers can see you, and let them come.

The one rule

Only reach out to people who have signalled they want something. Everything else is cold outreach wearing a friendlier name, and communities punish it — usually by removing you.

Be useful before being available

Answer three questions for every time you mention what you do. The ratio matters more than the content: it is what makes people read your name as a contributor rather than as a vendor.

Specialise out loud

People refer what they can describe. 'The woman who does bookkeeping for trades' gets referred; 'a bookkeeper' does not. Say the narrow version every time.

Let the profile do the selling

If your answers are good, people check who you are. A profile that clearly states what you do and how to contact you converts that curiosity without a single pitch in a thread.

Frequently asked questions

What is social selling?

Using social platforms to build visibility and relationships with potential buyers rather than to broadcast offers. Done properly it means answering questions publicly and letting interested people contact you.

Is social selling just cold DMs?

No — unsolicited DMs are cold outreach. Social selling means being useful where buyers already are, so that the first message is one they send you.

How long does social selling take to work?

Enquiries can start within weeks in active communities, but the compounding effect — being the name people refer — takes months of consistent participation.
