How to find old posts in a Facebook group by keyword

Group search works, badly, and only backwards. What it can do, where it fails, and why it is not a substitute for alerts.
Short answer
Use the search box inside the group itself, not Facebook's main search — open the group, tap the magnifying glass, and search within it. It covers posts and comments the group has retained, it is not reliably complete on older content, and it is entirely retroactive: it will never tell you about a post that appears five minutes from now.
Two different jobs get confused here. Finding what was already said is search. Knowing when something new is said is alerting. Facebook does the first, imperfectly, and not the second at all.
How to search inside one group
Open the group, use the search icon on the group page rather than the global search bar, and enter your phrase. Results cover posts and often comments. Sorting and filtering are limited, and results thin out the further back you go.
Where it falls down
Older content is inconsistently returned, there is no way to save a search, and there is no export. Anything you find has to be acted on immediately or copied somewhere by hand, and a thread from three weeks ago is usually a dead lead anyway.
Search is for research, not for leads
It is genuinely useful once: search a group you are about to join for the phrases your customers would use. If nobody has ever asked for what you sell, the group is not worth watching. If they ask weekly, it is. That one search tells you where to spend your attention.
Then switch to watching forward
After that, the value is all in the future. Someone asking today gets three replies within the hour and picks one; your search next Tuesday finds a closed conversation. Monitoring exists because the useful window is minutes wide.
